ZOCOR INFORMATION
About Merck & Co., Inc
Merck & Co., Inc. is a global research-driven pharmaceutical
company. Merck discovers, develops, manufactures and markets a
broad range of innovative products to improve human and animal
health, directly and through its joint ventures.
Merck & Co., Inc., is the manufacturer of the
cholesterol-lowering prescription drug Zocor (simvastatin),
ZOCOR1 (simvastatin) is a lipid-lowering agent that is derived
synthetically from a fermentation product of Aspergillus terreus.
Simvastatin is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor. Simvastatin
blocks the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in the
body. Simvastatin is used to reduce the total amounts of
cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides (another type
of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make
cholesterol) in your blood. Simvastatin (Zocor) is also used to
increase the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood.
These actions may reduce the risk of hardening of the arteries,
which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular
disease .
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Zocor in 1991
Statin drugs have become very popular and are being widely
prescribed in recent years to lower high blood cholesterol and
thus reduce the risk for heart disease. These drugs block
cholesterol production in the body by inhibiting the enzyme
called HMG-CoA reductase in the early steps of its synthesis in
the mevalonate pathway.
This same biosynthetic pathway is also shared by CoQ10.
Therefore, one consequence of statin drugs is the unintentional
inhibition of CoQ10 synthesis. Statin drugs could predispose the
patients to heart disease by lowering their CoQ10 status, the
very condition that these drugs are intended to prevent.
ZOCOR ® (Simvastatin) Tablets SIDE EFFECTS
