Teflon, the coating on non-stick pans used in millions of
kitchens throughout the world has been linked to birth defects
in humans. Chemical firms face claims that perfluorinated
organic chemicals, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which
is in Teflon and first used in 1945, and oil and water-resistant
coatings, are a health threat.
Du Pont, which makes Teflon, responded to questions that it had
evidence about dangers posed by PFOA but deliberately and
illegally kept it secret. The US Environmental Protection Agency
says that Du Pont concealed its own 1981 research showing that
its pregnant workers were passing the chemical to their unborn
children. In addition, in 1991, it failed to report evidence
that the chemical had contaminated the water supply to 12,000
people
Chemicals used in Teflon and Scotchguard are showing up in the
bloodstream of humans throughout the world, with higher levels
in the United States and other highly developed nations,
according to a 2004 study.
The Teflon chemical PFOA, like other fluorochemicals, is in
people everywhere. It never breaks down in the environment and
it's toxic at or near levels found in humans
Company memos show the compound was passed in 1981 from a
pregnant employee to her fetus, but DuPont allegedly failed to
report the information to the EPA as required under federal law.
The company has denied the allegations.
EPA officials became concerned after 3M revealed that its
studies found small amounts in people across the United States.
Other 3M tests found the compounds in foods such as apples,
bread, green beans and ground beef
EPA stepped up its investigation last year because of concerns
about potential links between the compounds and reproductive and
developmental problems in young girls and women. Levels of the
compounds in some children have been as high as those for
chemical-plant workers and were close to levels that caused
developmental problems in rats.
A search for products on QVC, brought up 49 Teflon products,

PFOA TEFLON SIDE EFFECTS
Perfluoronated compounds have been found in the blood of
virtually every person tested for them in the United States,
including children as young as 2. The compounds have been linked
to cancer, developmental problems, liver damage and other
ailments in animals, though there is no general agreement about
their effects on humans.
PFOA TEFLON CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
Bucky Bailey is a member of one of eight families living near
the Du Pont factory in Parkersburg, West Virginia, who are suing
the company over the effects of PFOA. His mother, Sue Bailey,
was a factory worker exposed to PFOA while pregnant. Mr. Bailey
was born with only one nostril and other facial defects
